History

🇺🇸 The American Legion: A Century of Service and Strength

Founded in 1919 by Congress, The American Legion began as a haven for World War I veterans—and grew into one of the most influential nonprofit organizations in the United States. With over 1.6 million members and 12,000+ posts worldwide, the Legion stands as a pillar of support for veterans, active-duty servicemembers, and communities across the globe.

For over 100 years, the Legion has:

  • Championed landmark legislation like the GI Bill

  • Delivered lifesaving aid to veterans exposed to toxic hazards

  • Fostered citizenship and leadership in America’s youth

  • Built a legacy of honor, advocacy, and community service

From Noblesville to Normandy, the mission remains the same: to serve those who served—and to strengthen the nation they defended.
