Patriotism and veterans advocacy are so important to the American Legion Auxiliary that for a century, we’ve been serving, educating, and giving to America’s finest — our military.

We answer the call of Service Not Self. We are the male and female spouses, grandmothers, mothers, sisters, and direct and adopted female descendants of members of The American Legion. Some of us are veterans ourselves.

We are the American Legion Auxiliary. And we make a difference. You’ll find us in more than 8,000 local communities in the USA and in foreign countries. Founded in 1919 during the first National Convention of The American Legion, the ALA has grown to be one of the largest veterans support organizations. And we’d love for you to be part of our mission outreach.

Eligibility

✅ Eligible Individuals for ALA Membership

Female Relatives of American Legion Members
- Grandmothers, mothers, sisters, spouses, and direct/adopted female descendants of current members of The American Legion.
Female Relatives of Veterans Who Served During Specific Wartime Periods
- Those related to men or women who served:
  - April 6, 1917 – November 11, 1918 (World War I)
  - Any time after December 7, 1941 (World War II and beyond)
- The veteran must have:
  - Been a U.S. citizen at the time of service
  - Served on active duty in the Armed Forces of the U.S. or allied governments
  - Died in the line of duty or received an honorable discharge
Female Relatives of U.S. Armed Forces Veterans
- Same service periods as above
- Applies specifically to those who served in the U.S. Armed Forces
- Must have died in the line of duty or been honorably discharged
Women Eligible in Their Own Right
- Any woman who qualifies for membership in The American Legion based on her own military service is also eligible to join the Auxiliary—even if she’s not a Legion member herself2.
