Eligibility
👨👦 Eligibility for Sons of The American Legion Membership
To be eligible, an individual must be:
1. Male Descendant of a Legion Member

Includes:

Sons
-
Grandsons
-
Great-grandsons
-
Adopted sons
-
Stepsons
-
-
The sponsoring veteran must be a member of The American Legion.
2. Male Descendant of a Veteran Who Served Honorably
-
The veteran must have served during one of the following periods:
-
April 6, 1917 – November 11, 1918 (World War I)
-
December 7, 1941 – Present (World War II and beyond)

The veteran must have:
-
Died in service during one of these periods, or
-
Died after receiving an honorable discharge

There is no other class of membership—only active membership is recognized.

Women are not eligible for SAL, but may qualify for the American Legion Auxiliary.

Documentation of the veteran’s service (e.g., DD-214) is typically required.
